How your graphic design agency can boost your brand with social design

Author: Beyond Design
In today's digital era, most businesses need one or more social media platforms. The challenge is to maximise these so that they fulfil your marketing goals. In order to achieve this, it is important to think about social design and how it should be approached on each platform. The main emerging trend is that social design is moving away from being built around content linked to content, to content organised and filtered by people's interests and relationships. So how should you approach your own social media with your graphic design agency to make sure they successfully turn your customers into fans?
So what is social design? In a nutshell, it is the creation of products and services that help people to communicate with one another and understand each other opinions. To approach it, you will have to take into account the four pillars of the social web: networks, identity, connectedness and communication.
Networks: people now live in incredibly complex invisible networks. These networks mean that we interact in intricate systems where our behaviours, attitudes and perceptions are constantly shaped by people around us. "If the web is being re-built around people, and people live in networks, then it becomes very clear that we need to design systems, not destinations". If you look at Facebook from a graphic design point of view, it becomes clear that it is not a website, it is an eco-system. The user is at the centre with its "story" and all elements around the story (page/timeline) promote interaction with others (in various networks).
The best designers will therefore need to design systems rather than destinations (to drive traffic to) and to do that successfully, they will have to understand how people interact with one another: this is the new era of social graphic design.
So what are the areas of social design that need to be addressed in order to build successful platforms?
Identity: how we control how other perceive us
  • Build experiences either based on our social identity (which helps us feel the same as others and give us a sense of belonging) or based on our personal identity (which helps us feel unique).
  • Build on existing behaviour and norms
  • Design new experiences to fit with pre-existing beliefs
Connectedness: all the people we're connected to and how we feel about these people
  • Give suggestions for who to communicate with
  • Show people things they have in common with others
  • Help people create and strengthen groups
Communication: why we talk to people we're connected to and what we talk about
  • Design experiences that help build relationships
  • Optimise for communication between people who know each other
  • Make it easy for people to talk about others
